Technology and Beyond

You now have a slightly better understanding of what data is and how we generate and use data. Now we are going to learn a little bit about the technical side of things. But first: How far can you count on your fingers?

Most people can count to ten. However, if you learn to count using the binary system, you can do much better: You’ll get all the way to 1024.
This is the magic of 0s and 1s. You will become more familiar with these in this chapter.
The digital transformation clearly could not have taken place without digital technology. Therefore, in this chapter we delve into this, examining the technologies upon which digitalisation and the digital transformation depend, as well as technologies that, in turn, are dependent on data.
We will broadly consider how data and computers actually work. And we will look at the ecosystem of technologies of which digital data is a part —from networks, protocols, and programming, to artificial intelligence systems, the Internet of Things, and digital twins.
And last but not least, we will discuss security. Let's get started!

Chapter 2

What you will learn

What is the difference between analogue and digital data? How is data processed in a computer? What technologies are data dependent on—and what technologies are dependent on data?
In this chapter, we examine these questions related to the technology surrounding data.
You will also familiarise yourself with basic principles of coding, see how we can protect ourselves against our data ending up in the wrong hands or our data being misused—and even learn how artificial intelligence systems are created!
What are you waiting for? The journey continues here!
